ABOUT THOR LAEWE
Thor Laewe is a film composer and music producer based in Los Angeles.
Thor was born in Munich and started playing classical piano at age 7 and had his first professional music endeavor at 9 years old when he was recruited by the National Opera of Munich as the lead singer in the boy’s choir. For 4 years he was performing in Operas such as La Bohéme, Carmen, Tosca, Hansel and Gretel and Wozzeck.
In his teenage years, Thor started studying arranging and orchestration with Composer/Jazz Pianist Pepsi Auer. Thor started getting fascinated by Synthesizers and began building his own studio setup which consisted of a TB-303, Korg M-1, Portastudio 4 Track, Atari1040ST running Creator / Notator.
He later relocated to the United States to attend Berklee College of Music graduating with a degree in Music Production & Engineering as well as studying Music Synthesis. While attending Berklee he was working as an assistant engineer at legendary Blue Jay Recording Studios.
After graduating Berklee College of Music, Thor decided to relocate to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the music industry.
In Los Angeles, Thor’s studio & engineering knowledge got him hired as a freelance recording engineer and later mixing engineer working with the biggest artists of the early 2000’s such as Brandy, Mario, Christina Aguilera, Luther Vandross and Backstreet Boys amongst others. He earned 4 platinum and 4 Gold records as an engineer.
Thor wanted to steer his focus more into composing and producing music for Film & TV and other media. He was offered the opportunity to shift gears and be the staff composer at a LA Music Production House specializing in music for TV- commercials.
In the movie trailer world, Thor has scored an array of big blockbuster movie trailers such as; “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” (Marvel) and “Ant Man” (Marvel). “Pirates of the Caribbean” (Disney), “Sicario” (Lionsgate), “Corpses Bride” (Warner Bros), “Déjà Vu” (Disney). His music is also featured in numerous other trailer campaigns such as the TV-Show “Billions” (Showtime) and “VICE” (HBO), the videogame “Mortal Kombat X” (Warner Bros).
He has also scored hundreds of anime TV-show episodes for franchises from Disney, TOEI and Cartoon Network. The list of shows include; “Digimon”, Disney’s “Stitch” franchise, “Megaman” and “Zatchbell”.
Since 2006 Thor collaborates with composer Cliff Martinez as an additional composer on Films such as "Game Night", "The Foreigner", "Hotel Artemis", "Den of Thieves" amongst many others. Recently, they just finished the brand new Amazon series "The Wilds".
Thor has always been passionate about creating his own sounds, instruments and sample libraries for use in his own compositions. To further that passion and bring these ideas to other composers, Thor co-founded Laboratory Audio (www.laboratoryaudio.com), a sample library company that specializes in instruments for film composers.
